In 2019, excavations from the last years were continued in area 1. During excavations in older layers, we came across a garbage dump in the southwest that dates back to the late Roman period. In the east of the excavation, the Byzantine house found last year could be excavated around further rooms. Maybe some of the rooms even belong to a new house. Unexpectedly a Miqwe was excavated in area 1 this year. This means that the foundations can now be safely dated back to Roman times. In addition, further cisterns and canals were found in the entire area.
This year was the first year of digging in area 3. Area 3 is located on the Zionsberg cemetery further north than Area 1 and is thus located between Area 1 and the Greek garden. In this new section the city wall described by BLISS and DICKIE should be pursued further. The two edges of the dry ditch (so-called Fosse) could be located. It is interesting to note that this was dug in the middle of a residential house from Roman times. The destroyed house found had a Miqwe. In addition, a mosaic floor and red wall plaster typical of the time were found. . .
